Colts sign Pro Bowl LT Eric Fisher to one-year, $9.4M deal

The Indianapolis Colts have a new quarterback and a new person to protect him. 

ESPN's Adam Schefter (h/t Mike Wells) reports that Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher is signing a one-year, $9.4 million contract with the Colts to block for quarterback Carson Wentz. Fisher, who turned 30 in January, was released by the Kansas City Chiefs as a salary-cap casualty in March after eight seasons with that organization. 

Fisher earned his second Pro Bowl nod for the 2020 season but suffered a torn Achilles in the AFC Championship Game and missed the Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His status for the fall is in question, but the Colts clearly believe signing him to something bigger than what most would classify to be a "prove it" deal is worth the risk for a club that nearly toppled the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs. 

Per Wells, Colts general manager Chris Ballard was in the Kansas City front office when the Chiefs drafted Fisher with the first overall selection in 2013. Indianapolis lost starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo to retirement in January. Wentz, meanwhile, took a league-worst 50 sacks in 12 games with the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2020 campaign.
