Veteran DL Danny Shelton joins Giants on one-year deal

Reports surfaced earlier on Monday that veteran defensive lineman Danny Shelton would be meeting with New York Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and defensive line coach Sean Spencer as head coach Joe Judge and others were out of town and attending the University of Miami pro day.

That meeting apparently went quite well.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and other outlets have confirmed Shelton has agreed to join the Giants on a one-year contract that will likely end up being a "prove it" deal for the 27-year-old listed at 6-foot-2 and 345 pounds. Shelton will be tasked with replacing defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, who signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings early in free agency.

Shelton spent the 2020 regular season with the Detroit Lions and recorded 37 total tackles with one sack, two tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, and one pass breakup across 12 games. Pro Football Focus added:

However, Dan Benton of Giants Wire previously noted: "In 2020, Shelton was given a career-low grade of 51.1 courtesy of Pro Football Focus, but that came after four consecutive seasons grading out between 69.6 and 82.1."

Shelton played for the New England Patriots in 2018 and 2019 while Judge was a member of Bill Belichick's coaching staff and earned a Super Bowl ring with the organization. The Cleveland Browns drafted Shelton 12th overall in 2015 but traded him to New England in March 2018.
