Liverpool were dealt a blow during their recent 2-0 win over Sheffield United as defender Joel Matip suffered a nasty knee injury. It was since reported the German defender could be out of action for the rest of the season because of it. Due to this injury, Liverpool appears to be targeting Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix.

Liverpool Eyeing Maxence Lacroix As Joel Matip Replacement

How Much Could Maxence Lacroix Signing Cost Liverpool?

The Mirror’s John Cross has reported that the Reds could now look into finding a replacement for Matip due to his injury, leaving them shorthanded at the back. It’s also mentioned that with Matip’s current contract expiring in the summer and Liverpool already looking to strengthen their backline, they have centre-back Lacroix on their transfer radar.

The journalist also adds that Jurgen Klopp’s side will have to negotiate a deal for the 23-year-old defender, who currently has two years remaining on his contract at the Bundesliga club and could be available for upwards of £25 million. The Frenchman is a commanding and powerful defender who can possibly add more depth to their backline and fit into the side’s plans immediately rather than being one for the future.

What Can Lacroix Bring To Anfield?

Lacroix has been a part of Wolfsburg since 2020 after joining the German side from Sochaux and has become a vital part of the team. The 23-year-old has already made 113 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring four goals and providing an assist.

However, the Frenchman is best known for being a solid centre-back who can maintain a tight defensive line. He has made 12 appearances in the league for Wolfsburg this season, helping them keep two clean sheets and fight for a place in the top half of the table.

Lacroix has been described as a “defensive rock” in the past, whose playing style has been compared – to that of ex-England international Rio Ferdinand in the sense that he excels in moving forward with the ball as well as exhibiting impressive passing abilities alongside his composed defensive nature. The 23-year-old can be a solid addition to the Reds’ backline as a future partner for Virgil van Dijk and provide potential competition for defender Ibrahima Konate.
