Nemanja Matic has been strongly linked to a move to Rennes over the weekend, but Roma refuted the reports, indicating that the Serb wasn’t for sale. The midfielder didn’t play in Sunday’s friendly versus Toulouse. However, he missed out because he wasn’t fully fit and not because of transfer market reasons.

According to Ouest France, the ex-Manchester United stalwart is in advanced talks on his personal terms. Instead, the two teams are discussing the fee. He had joined the Giallorossi on a free transfer.

Per SportMediaset, Roma vigorously dismissed the chatter suggesting Matic would join Rennes. They plan to continue leaning on him. The addition of a new option in the same role isn’t a direct correlation to his departure.

The Serbian international renewed his contract at the beginning of the summer. It expires in 2024 with an option. He will make €3.5M next year, Calciomercato informs.

Our Take on Rennes and Matic

That’s an odd one, as it would be more understandable if he were keen on a move to Saudi Arabia for whopping wages or to a team that plays in the Champions League. If he didn’t want to stay, he could have just not re-upped. Instead, the more interesting topic is what happened to the Renato Sanches deal, which seemed on the brink of going through a week ago.
